Unlike long-term housing, transitional housing is designed to help you stabilise your circumstances while you work towards securing a more permanent home. This may include moving into social housing or the private rental market, depending on your situation.
As a registered Community Housing Provider, Home in Place can help eligible people access transitional housing across New South Wales and Queensland. We work with you to understand your circumstances, connect you with support services where needed, and help you take practical steps towards finding a long-term housing solution.
Transitional housing programs in QLD
Community Rent Scheme
The Community Rent Scheme is a transitional housing program that provides accommodation for eligible people and families for up to 18 months while they build the stability and capacity to return to the private rental market.
Under this scheme, Community Housing Providers like Home in Place rent properties from private landlords or the Queensland Government, and then lease them out to tenants.
The Department of Housing and Public Works has funded Home in Place to rent privately owned properties to be leased to those who are eligible for 25% of the household income plus rent assistance.
We manage a variety of housing options through this program, from single units to family houses. The type and size of property you may be offered will depend on your housing needs, household size, location and the availability of suitable properties.
Community Managed Studio Units Program
The Community Managed Studio Units Program is a transitional housing program that provides accommodation for eligible people for up to 18 months.
The program offers affordable, furnished housing options, with rent generally calculated at 28% of the household’s assessable income, plus any Commonwealth Rent Assistance the household is eligible to receive.
Properties available through the program may include one-bedroom apartments, self-contained studio units, or studio-style accommodation with some shared facilities, such as a kitchen, bathroom or laundry.
Some properties may also include furnishings, communal living areas, shared courtyards or outdoor spaces. The type of accommodation you may be offered will depend on your housing needs, household circumstances, location and the availability of suitable properties.
Transitional housing in NSW
Housing Pathways is the main entry point for people seeking social housing assistance, including transitional housing, in NSW. It is delivered through a partnership between Homes NSW, the Aboriginal Housing Office and participating Community Housing Providers, like Home in Place.
Housing Pathways connects a range of housing support options through a single system, with one application, consistent eligibility criteria, a standard assessment process and a single wait list known as the NSW Housing Register.
The type of assistance offered through this system will depend on your individual circumstances, housing needs, location and the availability of suitable properties.
Here to help you access long-term housing
If you accept a transitional housing offer from Home in Place, you will be required to enter into a tenancy agreement with us.
As part of your agreement, we will help develop a tenancy plan with you to assist you in finding more secure housing.
This plan will help to identify which long-term accommodation options are available to you based on your needs and circumstances.
This may be in community housing or the private rental market.

In New South Wales, most applications are made through Housing Pathways, the state’s shared access system for social housing and housing assistance. Rather than applying separately to different organisations, Housing Pathways allows you to complete one application that can be considered by Homes NSW and participating community housing providers, including Home in Place.
Depending on your circumstances, you may be assessed for temporary accommodation, private rental assistance, transitional housing or longer-term social housing. You can apply online, by calling 1800 422 322, or by visiting your nearest Homes NSW housing office.
In Queensland, you can apply by contacting your nearest Housing Service Centre. They will discuss your circumstances, assess your eligibility and talk through your housing needs. If you are eligible, you may be placed on the Queensland Housing Register and considered for available transitional housing programs.
