Kristy’s Story

Since moving into her new supported accommodation late last year, Kristy has felt a shift. Not just in her surroundings, but in her outlook on life.

“I feel more supported, motivated and secure,” she says.

Having lived in a Home in Place managed social housing property previously, the transition to her current SDA home has brought the kind of support and stability Kristy had been seeking.

“My mental health has improved a lot since moving. I’m free to be me and surrounded by lovely workers and housemates. The workers really make me feel supported, take their time with me, listen and understand how to properly communicate, and be patient.”

One of the most meaningful parts of her new home life is the connection she has formed with someone she now calls a lifelong friend.

“I have made a lifelong friend within the home I live in. I love that I can access the community, and that it is close, local, and wheelchair friendly.”

With access to the right support and the ability to maintain her independence, Kristy has found new energy to focus on the things that matter to her, from her wellbeing to her goals.

“My mum can come and stay with me sometimes, and we still have our own space and privacy. She does not have to worry, and she knows she is supported and safe here too.”

Kristy’s days now are shaped by calm routines and personal milestones. She enjoys music, cooking, cleaning her own space, and spending time with her beloved cat, Tiger, her loyal companion and emotional anchor. She is also working towards two goals close to her heart: starting hydrotherapy and swimming with dolphins.

Looking back, Kristy acknowledges the difficulties she faced before the move.

“My mental health was declining. My hygiene was not the best, and my family were worried. I became more aware of how bad things were getting and realised I needed change.”

With the help of her family, a caring support coordinator, and dedicated service providers, she found her way to a safer and more nurturing environment.

“Coming into an SDA house and knowing I can still maintain my level of independence but have support when I need it has made a huge difference.”

Kristy is proud of the growth she has achieved, especially in being able to advocate for herself and others.

“I am included and supported in my care, decisions and goals. That is really important to me.”

To others going through a tough time, she offers encouragement.

“Get out when you can, and realise you deserve better. Do not be afraid to reach out and get the support you are entitled to.”

As for what is next?

“Just continuing to maintain the healthy life balances. Keeping who I am and not going back to the person I was before. I do not want to lose everything I have worked so hard for.”
