In Victoria, Home in Place delivers social housing that supports tenants to feel secure and supported in their homes.
We value tenant voices and encourage participation through local activities, events and opportunities to share experiences and feedback. Tenant stories, surveys and feedback help shape our services and inform our advocacy.
Paying your rent
We offer a range of rent payment options to support tenants in different circumstances. Paying rent on time helps maintain your tenancy and supports the ongoing management of your home.

If you are experiencing financial difficulty, please contact your Tenancy Relations Officer as early as possible so support options can be discussed.
Rent reviews
In Victoria, market rent is reviewed and adjusted generally on an annual basis in line with Victorian housing policy. Tenants are notified in writing of any changes.
Victorian Government tenancy services and support
The Victorian Government offers various programs for public renters who need support or financial help.
Tenancy Plus Support Program
Tenancy Plus is a support program for public renters in Victoria. It’s designed to help people stay in their homes and avoid homelessness.
If you’re a community housing renter listed on the Victorian Housing Register, you’re also eligible for Tenancy Plus.
Support providers will work with you to develop a plan that suits your needs and goals. They can also connect you with other local services that may be helpful.
Discount, Loans and Concessions
Housing VIC offers services to assist public renters in Victoria to purchase items, or apply for loans to, purchase items such as computers, white goods and furniture.
Keeping in Touch – Renter Contact Service
Keeping in Touch, is a free and confidential service available to public housing renters aged 75 years and over who live by themselves.
Cooler Places
On days when the Bureau of Meteorology issues a heatwave warning, Housing VIC converts some community facilities into ‘Cooler Places’.
Cooler places are air-conditioned. They give public housing renters and residents relief from the hot weather. Cooler places help older and vulnerable people deal with the heat.
Tenancy issues and legal advice
Housing VIC provides information and advice to renters regarding their rights and responsibilities including:
- Support for renters;
- What to do if you get a notice to vacate;
- Legal and dispute advice;
- Family relationship support.
Victorian Public Tenants Association
The Victorian Public Tenants Association (VPTA) is the peak body representing all people who live in public housing in Victoria, and those on the wait list (called the Victorian Housing Register or VHR).
The VPTA provides a free telephone advice service from Monday – Friday, 9am – 5pm (excluding public holidays). You can contact the VPTA on 1800 015 510 or visit vpta.org.au
Water usage
Water usage is charged in line with Victorian legislation. Where applicable, tenants are responsible for paying water usage charges for their home.
Water charges are shown separately on tenant statements and are payable in addition to rent. This helps ensure transparency about how charges are calculated and applied.

We are committed to listening to renters and responding to concerns fairly, respectfully and in line with Queensland Government requirements.
Feedback helps us improve our services, while complaints provide an opportunity to address issues and resolve them appropriately.

Housing transfers
If you are an existing Home in Place tenant in Victoria and wish to transfer to another property, you must apply through the Victorian Government.
Housing transfers in Victoria are managed by Housing Victoria and assessed in line with Victorian housing policy.
