The proposed $10 billion Housing Australia Future Fund (HAFF) will build 30,000 new social and affordable housing properties in the first 5 years. Once established, the expected $500m per annum investment returns will be used to fund social and affordable housing projects across Australia.
Of the initial 30,000 homes to be built, 10,000 will provide affordable housing for frontline workers like police, nurses and cleaners.
20,000 homes will provide social housing with 4,000 homes targeted for women and children leaving or experiencing domestic and family violence and older women who are at risk of homelessness.
In addition to building 30,000 new social and affordable homes, returns from the first five years of HAFF are intended to fund:
- the repair, maintenance and improvements of housing in remote Indigenous communities,
- crisis and transitional housing options for women and children fleeing domestic and family violence, and older women on low incomes who are at risk of homelessness, and
- housing and specialist services for veterans who are experiencing homelessness or who are at risk of homelessness.
