Home in Place’s Pantry at the 123 Community Hub in Broken Hill, is celebrating its first birthday today!

Since opening in April 2024, the Pantry has had a significant impact on the community by providing affordable groceries and support to those who need it most.

Thanks to partners like Foodbank, the Pantry offers low or no-cost grocery items to the local community.

Over the past year, the Pantry has seen steady growth, with sales reflecting the increasing demand and the community’s reliance on this vital service.

Stacey Burns, a Tenancy Relations Officer with Home in Place, shared a heartfelt story about a couple who, while traveling, ended up in Broken Hill for a few weeks after unexpected car repairs drained their funds.

“The couple were referred to the Pantry for assistance as they had nothing until their next pension came through,” Stacey said.

“We gave them a Foodbank hamper they were extremely thankful. They had never seen anything like the Pantry before.”

Stories like these highlight the Pantry’s role as a crucial safety net for vulnerable individuals and families.

Despite fluctuations due to weather and operational challenges, the Pantry maintains strong results, with monthly sales averaging around $3,500.

Profits from sales are reinvested into community programs, including the 123 Community Hub and tenant participation initiatives, ensuring ongoing support for those who need it most.

Modelled on a successful shop at Home in Place’s other established community hub, The Meeting Place on the NSW Central Coast, the Pantry has already established itself as a valuable resource in Broken Hill.

The initial fit-out of the Pantry was partially offset by profits from The Meeting Place, demonstrating Home in Place’s broader commitment to creating sustainable communities.

As the Pantry continues to grow, its role becomes even clearer – a vital resource, providing not just groceries but an essential safety net for those in need.
