Hunter Residences Program

The Hunter Residences Program is a landmark initiative that supported people with disability to move out of large residential institutions and into purpose-built, community-based homes across the Hunter region.

Home in Place, as part of the Home4Life consortium with BlueCHP Limited and the Lighthouse Infrastructure Fund Trust, was selected by the NSW Government to help deliver this transformative program.

Together, we delivered 64 architecturally designed homes that provide people with disability greater choice, dignity and independence.

A project of firsts

This was the first project in Australia to be funded through Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) payments under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). It was also the first to attract investment from the Australian superannuation sector via Lighthouse Infrastructure.

The homes were designed for contemporary community living, meeting both NDIS and NSW Government design standards. Each residence was developed through detailed planning, with active involvement from residents and their families to ensure the homes reflected individual needs and preferences.

Our role

BlueCHP led the development of the homes, while Home in Place contributed to design and consultation, and now manages long-term tenancy and asset management. Our ongoing role also includes community engagement to support residents to live well and feel connected.

The Hunter Residences Program shows how public, private and not-for-profit sectors can partner to create real change—delivering better housing and better outcomes for people with disability.
