Home in Place is the Hunter’s most outstanding community organisation

Home in Place has again been recognised as the NSW Hunter Region’s most outstanding community organisation at the 2024 Business Hunter Awards.

It is the second time in three years that Home in Place has been given this recognition, having also won the Outstanding Community Organisation category at the Business Hunter Awards in 2022.

This award is one of several recent awards recognising Home in Place for the work that it does for people needing housing. It also won three 2024 Australian Business Awards for brand management, Employer of Choice and HR Management.

Hunter Business Awards organisers said Home in Place actively contributes to communities through its programs and projects to enhance neighbourhoods.

Group Chief Financial Officer Lisa Evans accepted the award at a gala ceremony in Newcastle on September 13.

Lisa said the award means a lot to the staff at Home in Place because community is important to people and central to its work. She said they share in a vision of not just providing appropriate and affordable housing but ensuring tenants are engaged in sustainable communities.

“I’d like to say that there is no need for an organisation like ours, but the national housing crisis means there is a tremendous need for the work we do in the Hunter and other regions across the country,” Lisa said.

“I feel extremely humbled and privileged to work for Home in Place.”

“We have an amazing team of people who are fantastic at what they do.”

Lisa said housing is a fundamental human right but sadly not everyone has access to a safe and affordable roof over their head. Often because of circumstances or situations over which they had no control.

“Our tenants deserve outstanding and tailored wrap around support to help them to maintain their tenancy and have skills to overcome challenges or disadvantage and contribute to their community.

“Our tenant engagement and social activities include educational sessions, craft and hobby groups, computer classes, BBQ’s, luncheons, bus trips, and Christmas picnics.

“We strive to be a best practice organisation in everything we do including business performance, managing our impact on the environment and being an employer of choice.”

“Giving back to the communities in which you operate and receive support is also important. Home in Place is an active supporter of community initiatives relevant to our work as well as an active member of local and broader housing industry, business and community sector groups. Our Grow a Star charity helps young people to overcome barriers to them reaching their full academic, sporting or artistic potential.”

Home in Place started in the Hunter and is still headquartered in the region. During its almost 40 years of operation, it has grown to become a Tier 1 community housing provider, one of the largest in Australia. It has also become the largest managers of specialist disability accommodation in the country. Home in Place now manages more than 8,000 in Australia and New Zealand.
